A Bit of History
For your information, we’re located in the Blanchardstown/Castleknock district, in the western suburbs of Dublin, Ireland. It’s been a heady journey for CMS from our humble beginnings as a Choral group in the 1978. We expanded to a fully-fledged Musical Society and staged shows at various venues around the neighbourhood. Never ones to hide our light under a bushel, our members have featured on RTE (National TV), including the “Late, Late Show” and numerous “Theatre Nights” (on RTE Radio), as well as concerts with AIMS at the National Concert Hall. One of our most exciting gigs was our participation in Shaun Davey’s “The Pilgrim” at the Blanchardstown Centre, with Ben Kingsley, RTE Concert Orchestra, Rita Connolly, Liam O’Maonlai and a host of students from Dublin 15 in 2000. This was a Millennium Event for the area.

In March 2001 we were the first company to perform in the Auditorium of the new Draíocht Centre for the Arts beside Blanchardstown Centre. Treading the boards of Draíocht was a dream come true for the Society. It’s great to finally have a purpose built theatre in which to perform.

Oliver at Draíocht
Over a decade ago a small group of people in Dublin 15 united together with one vision – to create Ireland’s largest ever purpose built arts centre. Today this vision has become a reality, with the opening of Draíocht here in Blanchardstown. Draíocht means  “magic” in Irish and it will bring the magic of the arts to the immediate and wider community. It is a multi-purpose facility for creative activity – both making and viewing art.

Coolmine Musical Society was delighted to stage the first production in the auditorium of this great new facility. This was “Oliver!” which we staged from 5 to 10 March 2001. The seven performances were sold out, with the public demanding more. But seven shows were quite enough – “leave ‘em hungry!” The show featured a cast of 53 children between the Workhouse children and Fagin’s Gang.

The staging of “Oliver!” presented an enormous challenge to the Society which was matched in 2002 with the staging of "My Fair Lady" and in our very successful musical variety shows - "Razzle Dazzle" and "Encore!".
